Abigail, chased by a ferocious beast who wants to kill her, is desperately trying to find her way back home. Will she succeed?
The forest is where Abigail liked to go when her parents were fighting, and lately, they had been at it a lot. She had been scolded about walking through the woods alone because of the dangerous animals that lived there, but still, that is where she chose to walk.
On this journey through the woods, she encounters a red fox, who only stares at her and then runs off. Abigail takes off after the fox; she didn’t mean to make it run off, but running after the fox leads her to something unexpected.
Doors don’t belong in a forest unless there is a house or some sort of building they are attached to, but she sees a door standing while attached to nothing.
Red doors, blue doors, green doors, and black doors appear at various times, and none of them are held in place by anything. What are they doing there? What is their purpose?
After she passes through these doors, she is reunited—the reunion could be good or bad—with relatives who have died. Going to a funeral isn’t easy on a child, especially not a young child. The first funeral I ever went to was my mom’s. That was rough. I was so sure I saw her breathing while she was lying in her casket.
Abigail’s first funeral was that of her grandpa. She had been terrified of her grandpa, and her name for him was Grumpy Gramps. She finds him through one of these doors. As if that isn’t scary enough, she is also being pursued by a beast who wants to kill her. And she figures that Grumpy Gramps would help this beast out as much as he could.
She also finds her Granny Gem through another door. She loves her granny so much. But then Granny Gem begins to change, and the change isn’t good.
Each time she goes through a door, she discovers new things about herself and soon realizes that she holds an immense power. But how does she control it? All she wants to do is to go back home even if her parents are fighting. Will she manage to find her way back to them?
Did I enjoy reading this story? Yes, I did. The whole time I was reading, I kept wondering if Abigail was having a really weird dream or if she was really experiencing the doors in the woods. Did she really meet her dead grandpa and grandma? Was there really a beast that wanted nothing more than to kill her? If you love stories where things happen that just can’t be explained, then you will love this story to.

She believed Granny Gem had fought the beast, which is why he didn’t take her over completely, unlike Grumpy Gramps who probably invited the beast in and offered him snacks.
She figured that she would be the one most likely to end up dead in the raging river below or a meal for the beast.
