What famous April Fool’s hoax involves a food that many love? Could your character pull a hoax that tops this one? What will your character find during spring cleaning? How do early spring flowers give your character quite a scare? Your character is swallowed by a sinkhole. How does this happen, and does your character survive?
April 1-8
Some pretty famous April Fool’s hoaxes have taken place over the years. I think my favorite was the Spaghetti harvest hoax that happened in 1957. This particular hoax convinced many that spaghetti grew on trees and that there was a bumper crop that year.
The above video shows a few more hoaxes that people believed. Now it’s your turn. Come up with a hoax that even now people worldwide would believe if only for a few moments, one they would be embarrassed about having thought actually happened.

Cheeto is our outdoor cat (one who is very difficult to take good pictures of), and he is most likely the most spoiled outdoor cat in Kentucky. He has his own house outside, which during cooler temps is heated for his comfort, and he is fed three meals a day. If his food doesn’t appear at the expected time, he beats on the door and meows so loud that I’m sure my neighbors; none of which even live on the same road, can hear him.
Around the middle of March I was outside feeding him one evening. I stay out while he is eating and then take any food left back inside with me. It wasn’t dark yet but almost was. All I could see were shadows, which can be pretty creepy at times. That evening, they were. When I looked across our small road to the other part of our yard, I could barely see something moving in the slight breeze. I knew our grass wasn’t tall enough to be moving in the breeze like that, so what was it?
Was it an animal that had come out of the woods surrounding our house and was watching me and/or Cheeto? I kept watching the faint shadows moving in the breeze. Something was definitely there, but it wasn’t making any noise. No growls or anything. Hmm. I still didn’t like it, but I was too much of a scaredy-cat to walk across my little road and see what it was.

The next morning when I went out to feed Cheeto his breakfast, I saw what had been moving in the shadows, and I felt so stupid. My row of daffodils had bloomed and had been waving in the breeze. I hadn’t noticed them at all the previous day, not until that evening when I could no longer tell what they were.
No, I wasn’t the one who planted those flowers. There are a lot of flowers that bloom on my land each spring, but they were already here when we moved in. The only reason they are still blooming after so many years is that I never fool with them or try to care for them. That could be why I never noticed at first that they had bloomed. I just wasn’t watching for them and had forgotten they were there.
But what if it had been a silent predator?
Create a character that has this same experience. What if the daffodils had come to life and were hungry for blood?
Or maybe it was a huge snake or a pack of coyotes or wild dogs who were staying silent until attacking.
Had aliens found their way into my yard?

Spring cleaning is a time when you clean your entire home. You clean each and every room, top to bottom, cleaning things you don’t normally give any attention. National Spring Cleaning week was from March 23-29 this year, but you can choose any week you want to do your spring cleaning.
Your character does their spring cleaning during a week in April. This is their second year in their new home, so they don’t expect to find a lot of dirt since the house hasn’t had years of neglect from them. But while cleaning, they find something that shouldn’t be there, something that lets them know that a murder was committed there. What was it?

The below story doesn’t make me sleep any better, and I don’t even live in Florida. Because of what the ground beneath the house was made of, a sinkhole opened up underneath this man’s bedroom and swallowed him. He was never found, so we don’t know exactly what he went through.
Have your character go through what this man did. You decide what happens to your character. Let’s say he wasn’t killed. Did he land in some civilization beneath the ground? Has he become part of this civilization or have they kept him prisoner? Is he trying to get back to his family?
