December 2025 Writing Prompts

Christmas is a very special time of year. The giving of gifts and showing love for others is in the air. It is when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. It is also the time of year we watch The Grinch and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. But some suffer from Christmas/winter phobias that make this joyful season into one of terror for them.

So many Christmas/winter phobias exist that it is hard to choose just one to focus on for a writing prompts. I will name just a few specifically related to Christmas, and you can choose one of them to write a story about in which your character is affected by this particular phobia, or your character could have a whole slew of phobias.

Tarandophobia is the fear of reindeer. Or you could take it a step farther and give your character rudolphobia, the fear of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Fayophobia is the fear of elves, and santaphobia is the fear of Santa Claus. Why on earth would you have a fear of Santa? Well, maybe you had a terrifying experience with a fake Santa when you were a child.

Christougenniatikophobia, besides being hard to spell, is the fear of Christmas. If your character has this one, he would pretty much have phobias about everything to do with Christmas.

The year is 1939. Robert L. May, a quiet and thoughtful young man, was working for Montgomery Ward. That year, he was asked to do a job for the store where he was employed, the product of which turned out to be of far more importance than he could ever imagine. He was asked to write a Christmas story which the store could give to the children.

Robert felt like an outsider, so he wrote a story about someone else who felt like an outsider but became someone of great importance: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He poured himself into the writing of this story, and it quickly became a Christmas classic. I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t heard of this reindeer with a bright red nose.

For your writing prompt, put yourself in the place of this young man tasked with writing a Christmas story for his employer. Would you write about a reindeer? Or would you write about something else? Write the story that you would’ve written.

December 17-25
The Grinch has been a part of Christmas for me since I was a little girl. Who didn’t love the story of someone whose heart was black and hated Christmas so much that he tried to destroy it and take away all its joy? The below song, one that has always been a part of the show but is done in a much better way, describes the grinch so very well.

But how did The Grinch turn out to be like he was? Was he born that way? Was there some bad thing that happened to him during his childhood that gave him such a hatred of Christmas? You come up with a reason and write about it in your story.

December 26-31
Christmas, the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior, was yesterday. I’m going to give you something a bit different to write about in celebration of his birth.

This is sort of related to what you wrote last week about The Grinch. This time, I want you to write about The Grinch again, but I want you to write about him turning around his life, coming to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior. What event leads to him doing this? What turns his empty hole of a heart into a huge one that is full of love and giving? How does he show this change in him to his friends? Show how he becomes one who proclaims the true meaning of Christmas to everyone.
