In the small town of Weyport, one mother discovers just how far she will go to save her son.
Angus Reid is the new sheriff in Weyport. He is replacing the previous crooked one, and he is determined to rid this town of crime.
MJ is Jacob’s mom. She has a feeling Jacob is doing something wrong but hasn’t a clue what it is. When she discovers money and drugs hidden in his room, she is astonished and heartbroken. Although her boy is now missing, she doesn’t go to the police. She is determined to find him before something bad happens to him. You can feel her uncertainty that turns into a sure thing as to the path she will take even though it means keeping things from the sheriff and her husband. It means risking her own life.
Jacob is a good boy, but he sees that his mom and stepdad are in financial trouble, and he wants to help. But when he does find a way to help them, he knows what he is doing is wrong. Still, he does it. Only later he realizes just what he has gotten himself involved in. When his partner-in-crime disappears then turns up dead after telling Jacob that he’ll take care of the mess Jacob has made, Jacob realizes that he is probably dead because of what he himself has lost.
The tension is high in this emotional roller coaster of a book. You can feel the determination of Angus Reid to set everything right and rid this small town of the crime the former sheriff has allowed to flourish. He knows Jacob is involved in something not right, but he doesn’t want to interrogate the boy and push him away.
The characters of MJ and her son, Jacob, are written so well that I could feel the anguish coming from each of them. Will the sheriff be able to save Jacob and his mom from certain death?
