Jezebel: Harlot Queen of Israel – a Review

If you want to learn more about Jezebel than you were taught in Sunday School, then this is the book for you. If you’ve read your Bible, you know how this story ends. But I always wondered what happened that wasn’t written about in the Bible. I never took the time to go through all of the historical texts to find the answers, but now all of those empty spaces about Jezebel’s life are filled in with at least the things I wanted to know about, possibly more.

When Jezebel married King Ahab, the people of Israel were so sure she was bringing unity between her nation and Israel. In their minds, she was bringing change and progress to their nation. What she brought though was Baal, the storm god of Canaan.

And she brought chaos. So many Israelite girls wanted to be hired to work for her, and many of them were. But most if not all of those hired were sent to be temple prostitutes with no way to contact their families and tell them what was really going on.

She even has a temple built for Baal in the heart of Israel. Elijah, considered by some to be a mad prophet, challenges her to a duel between the deities they worship. This battle between the deities is one of the things I always associate with Jezebel as well as her rage when Baal loses and all of his prophets killed. She is so angry she threatens Elijah’s life, and he, even though he has just witnessed the amazing power of God, flees.

The other event I think of when I think about Jezebel is her being thrown to the ground and killed. It was foretold that this would happen and that she would be eaten by dogs. In this book, there was so much more going on around her at this specific time, things that only added tension to the story.

If, like me, when you read a really good book, you picture the events taking place in your head, you’ll absolutely love this book. Witness the battles between angels and demons as well as between the battles going on between men and in their thoughts.
