June 2025 Writing Prompts

Truth can be so much stranger than fiction.

June 1-8
Have you ever woke up in the morning and not recognized your surroundings? You have slept so deep, maybe dreaming you’re somewhere else, and then wake up to find nothing around you is familiar at all.

Or maybe you wake up only to find yourself in a hospital’s padded room. That happened to me after a car wreck that put me in a coma and temporarily took away so many of my memories that at first I didn’t even recognize my husband.

We can sleep through some amazing and noisy things. I don’t know how much noise a cargo ship would make when it runs aground, but I’m sure it has to make at least a little. Anyway, this man wakes to find a grounded cargo ship had narrowly missed running into his home while he was peacefully snoozing. I guess that is a danger when you live so close to a fjord.

My first intention was to have you write a story about a ship of some sort running into the land right next to where you live or maybe even running into your house. And you could do so.

But you could also write a story about waking up in a hospital with amnesia. Why are you in the hospital? What happened?

Or after a night of intense dreaming, you wake up only to find you don’t have a clue as to where you are. You’re in a strange room, there are no familiar sounds, and you don’t recognize anything you see. What happens?

Jiu-jitsu is a traditional Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner to kill or subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents. It is a good thing the young girl in the story below knew jiu-jitsu as it possibly saved her life.

Write a story about a young girl training in this martial art and how it changes her life, how it comes in handy for her, and how eventually she has a whole team of young people working with her in order to . . .

Your challenge is to create an unbelievable character. I say unbelievable because what the man in the below story did before his death was most certainly unbelievable. The drugged man survived an alligator attack. Do I believe someone could survive an alligator attack? Yes, I do, but he then emerged from the lake while obviously injured, grabbed some gardening shears, and attacked some policemen.

So when you create a character that accomplishes unbelievable things, when people tell you that what your character does is impossible, just clue them in to what this man did. He was shot and killed, but still, he was attacked by an alligator before attacking the policemen.

The scientific name for the raccoon is Procyon lotor, which means dog washer. The name raccoon originates from aroughcun, a Powhatan word that means one that scratches with its hands. In Italian, they are known as orsetto lavatore, which means little washing bear. The Germans refer to them as waschbär, which means wash-bear.

So raccoons are known for washing their food in water before eating it. But are they really washing it? It surprised me to discover that no, they are not. Of course, I’m not sure how scientists know this since they aren’t raccoons, but according to them, raccoons are simply wetting their hands to increase the sensitivity in them, allowing them to feel and memorize the food so that it can be quickly identified in the future.

Although raccoons are often described as pests, they are very intelligent animals, and President Calvin Coolidge even had a pet raccoon in the White House. The raccoon, Rebecca, was meant to be served as Thanksgiving dinner in !926, but President Coolidge fell in love with the adorable animal and pardoned her, deciding to keep her as a pet.

The raccoon in the story below did not have such a famous owner. When his owner was stopped by police, Chewy had a meth pipe in his mouth.

You need to write a story about a raccoon. Your raccoon could live in the White House, a mansion, a trailer park, or he could frequent a meth house.
