March 2025 Writing Prompts

How would you create an invisible sculpture, and would you be able to sell it? Your town is flooded and a monster, disturbed by the turbulent flood waters, emerges from the river. What happened to the inhabitants of the lost Roanoke colony? And what would fill your time if your computer and internet connection went down?

An artist sells an invisible sculpture for over $18,000. Yes, this really happened. How? Is this something that anyone could do? If so, I could get rich this way. The only effort involved is dreaming up what to tell people this invisible sculpture is.

If this sculpture was run over by a car, would it still exist? Would it damage the car? If you were walking down the street and the sculpture was in front of you, would you feel it if you ran into it? Could you trip over it?

This sounds like an April Fool’s joke, but some people will believe anything. But what if this sculpture really did exist and could actually be felt? Was it made by an alien?

What if this sculpture can only be seen under certain circumstances? What are those circumstances?

After torrential rains, a monster asleep in the river is awakened by the flood waters, and he is angry. The flood isn’t the fault of the residents of the small town, but this monster doesn’t really care. He wanted to keep sleeping, and someone must pay for waking him. What and who are left when the flood waters recede? What happened?

In 1587 in what is now North Carolina, the colony of Roanoke was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. Later that same year, John White, the governor of this colony, set sail back to England to get a load of supplies. But while he was in England, war broke out between England and Spain, and his return was delayed.

When he finally made it back to the colony three years later, he found no trace of its inhabitants, which included his wife, daughter, and infant granddaughter, Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the American colony.

There weren’t really any clues as to what had happened to them all, but the word “Croatoan” was carved into a wooden post. What happened to all the colony’s inhabitants? And was this a word a clue to why or where they had disappeared?

One theory about what happened to the settlers of Roanoke Island is that they joined Indian tribes that were nearby. Why would they do this?

Were they attacked? Did they move somewhere else? Did they all die of disease and/or starvation? Perhaps the went in search of a place with more food sources; it had been three years since the last ship had been there.

Did aliens come and kidnap them? Were they attacked by vampires, werewolves, or some other kind of monster? Did they stumble upon some creature that killed them all? Where did they go?

This month’s writing prompts article was published later than intended. Why? I was without my computer for over a week and couldn’t publish it. Technology has spoiled us, and we have come to depend upon it for so much.

I use my computer for lots of things: reading the news, paying my bills, writing, watching tv shows, finding recipes, keeping in touch with others, etc. I had to find other things to do during that time without my computer. It was like part of my life had been ripped away from me. I did soon get used to not being able to use my computer, but I didn’t like it.

What would you do if you had to go for over a week without any access to your computer? What would you do if you had no internet access at all? What would fill your days?
