March 2026 Writing Prompts

The weather tends to do its own thing, but the first day of spring is March 20 this year. This month you’ll write about just how smart chimpanzees are, a surprising conga line in a well-known store, St. Patrick’s Day and phobias, and a surprising yet painful way to commit suicide.

Chimpanzees are intelligent creatures. But just how smart are they?

Let’s say you create a character that works at a zoo. Your character makes friends with a chimpanzee to the point where the chimpanzee begins to mimic her actions. But one day, this chimpanzee notices that your character has accidentally left a way for him to get out of his enclosure. Of course, he takes advantage of this.

Where does this chimpanzee go? Well, he goes to the first place he can get access to. There is a subdivision very close to the zoo. He watches and then enters the house of an elderly lady. He leaves plates of food out for her to eat but stays out of her sight.

One day, there is a knock on the door, so the chimpanzee answers it to find a very surprised salesperson. What does this salesperson do? What happens to the chimpanzee?

While wearing a homemade watermelon helmet in a Walmart produce section, A woman shouts, “Free the watermelons!” The shoppers around her are shocked and don’t really have a clue how to react to this, but some who are bored begin shouting with her, and a conga line begins.

Was this done as a dare? Or is there a more sinister reason for her actions? Is she supposed to get the attention of all there for a massive robbery to take place? Or has someone kidnapped someone she loves, and she is made to do something stupid like this in order to have them freed?

Please feel free to substitute another fruit or vegetable for watermelons. Someone shouting to free the broccoli or free the grapes would attract just as much attention. Or your character could dress up as the Jolly Green Giant and shout, “Free the broccoli!”

What happens now that a conga line is marching through the store and captured everyone’s attention? I’m sure the staff at the store are freaked out a bit by this, but what do they do? Do they allow this conga line to continue? They would be booed by all the customers if they ended it. Or do they somehow put a stop to it?

March 25-31
Create a character that is a chef at a famous restaurant chain. He has been employed by this chain of restaurants for many years, but lately, he has been troubled. And on this particular day, he has reached a boiling point. Instead of lashing out and going on a killing spree, he decides to kill himself in a very dramatic way that I, someone who truly hates pain, would never do. He throws himself headfirst into a deep fryer. First, he takes all his clothes off though.

Now I say he decided to commit suicide, but I didn’t say he succeeded. If you click on the link, that guy did succumbed to his injuries, but that doesn’t mean your character has to.

What incident pushed him over the edge?

Does anyone try to stop him from going headfirst into the deep fryer? How? Do they succeed?

And why did he take all his clothes off first? Was he worried about ruining the clothes he was wearing?
