Have you ever had a monster under your bed? What are you going to do for your mother on Mother’s Day? Do you like to take selfies? Does it surprise you to learn that the first post office was in a tavern? Would you ever ask to take a selfie with a hijacker?

Did you ever have a babysitting job when you were young? I did. Keisha, the little girl I watched, lived just across the street from me, and she was a wonderful child. I remember watching the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana with her while at her house.

Never did anything like what happened to the babysitter in the story below happen to me. If it had, I would probably have never babysat for anyone ever again.

For your writing, you need to create a character with a babysitting job, one that she does regularly for a family.

In one scenario, the child could complain every night that there is a monster under his bed, the babysitter always looks to prove that there isn’t, and then the child goes to bed. But on this night. . .

Or another scenario, the child never complains about monsters being under the bed, but on this one night, they do. Worried, the babysitter takes a look and discovers. . .

On Sunday of this week, we celebrate our mothers, sometimes our stepmothers. I lost my wonderful mother when I was little and my memories of her are very few, well, they almost are nonexistent, but I do remember that my entire world felt like it collapsed when she was no longer there. I wanted nothing more than to go and be with her.

In time, my dad married a wonderful woman who, in turn, became a wonderful mother to me. She never tried to replace my mom, but she loved me and filled a void in my life, one that desperately needed to be filled.

This week, take time to think about your mother. Let her know how much you celebrate and love her, yes, but also write about her. Whether it is a sweet and gentle story, a mystery, a thriller, or a horror story—yes, it could even be a horror story—write a story about her that shows your love for her and how much she means to you.

The first U.S. post office was in a tavern. Although that shouldn’t have surprised me, it did. I mean, taverns were places where the townspeople gathered, news was exchanged, and happenings were kept up with. So it makes perfect sense that it would also be a place for getting your mail.

Write a story (fictional of course) about this tavern. Write about some important delivery that is on its way and in danger of being stolen before it gets there. You could make a mystery out of it. Make it full of excitement and adventure.

Being a passenger on a plane that is hijacked is not one of my life’s goals. I really don’t think it is for many people. But Ben Innes found himself in just such a situation. The plane he was traveling on was being hijacked, and he reacted in a very unusual way. What he did was brave in its own way. He didn’t panic, but he asked the hijacker if he could take a selfie with him. And the hijacker said yes. You can click on the link and read the story for yourself, and you can also watch an interview with this brave man.

Write a story about a plane being hijacked. Have one of your characters who is a passenger ask to take a selfie with one of the hijackers. Why? How does the hijacker react? Does he allow it? How many hijackers are there? What is their goal? How does the hijacking turn out? In other words, what happens?
