October 2025 Writing Prompts

Inside this month’s writing prompts, you’ll find Hansel and Gretel, gingerbread houses, pumpkin carving contests and Stringy Jack, black cats, and rainy days.

October 1-8
Growing up during medieval times was a lot more difficult for children than it is today. The story of Hansel and Gretel was one I chose to look into (see the video) and what I discovered was horrifying. There are so many tales you could come up with just from watching the video.

Apparently this fairy tale was based on many instances in real life. That came as a surprise to me. There wasn’t really a gingerbread house in the woods, but what if there had been? That part isn’t unsettling at all, but the truth of what was going on was. What if there had been a witch trying to attract children to her house? What would have happened? How would the story have gone?

Write your own story about a gingerbread house in the woods that have two children lost in the woods attracted to it. What happens? Are the children eaten by the witch? Or do they find some way to escape and defeat her?

October 9-15
Carving pumpkins comes from an Irish legend about Stringy Jack, who because of his dealings with the devil wasn’t allowed into either heaven or hell. He was just left to wander around earth with only a coal to light his way. People began calling him “Jack of the lantern,” and they would carve lanterns out of turnips, beets, potatoes, or pumpkins to scare away ghosts.

The town of (you name the town) has a huge pumpkin carving contest each year. It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, you’re invited to participate. Normally, the prize isn’t really worth anything. It would just be recognition for being the best at making an impressive jack-o-lantern. But this year, the prize is quite a lot of money along with many other things.

Who all participates in this? How much money is to be won? Someone wants that prize really bad. And they will do just about anything to earn it. Who? What are they planning to do? Are they discovered before they can do any real damage? Or are they not found out?

October 16-23
First, I ask you to please keep a very close watch on any black cat you own around halloween. People can be so cruel. I have three black cats, and they are wonderful!

Cat among the books, StockCake

Colorful leaves are swirling through the air on a cold windy day in October. Life has been hard lately, and you are out taking a walk, hoping it will cheer you up. Then you find a black cat that has obviously been living on its own for quite a while. This cat rubs against your legs and gives you such pleading, desperate looks that she melts your heart. What can you do but take her home with you?

So now you have a cat. What do you name her? How does she behave once you get her home?

What adventures do you have together? Adventures. Turns out this cat has magical abilities. How do they help on your adventures?

Maybe the following link to one of my articles will give you some great ideas on what to write about too.

October 24-31
September was a really hard month for me. My husband died around the beginning of the month, and that was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Everything else dims in comparison.

What has October held for me? I don’t know yet, but I do know that today (and it is still in September) is a rainy day. So I’m going to suggest some rainy day writing prompts you can use to write stories.

1) The rain is coming down and you are stuck in the house alone with your faithful companion, your dog. How are you going to pass the day? Then you remember: the attic. The attic that you dread cleaning has so patiently waited on you to fix it up. The attic that gives you chills everytime you even think about going up there. Tha attic that you have been hearing strange noises come from. Write about your rainy day cleaning out this attic.

2) The calm rain has turned into a harsh thunderstorm. The wind is torrential, and the light show the thunder and lightning provides is electrifying. The rain is coming down so hard on the tin roof that any other noise is drowned out. But somehow the knock on the door isn’t drowned out. It sounds loud and clear throughout the house.

You answer the door although questions are running rampant through your mind about who would be out in such horrible weather. But you can’t ignore whoever is out there. You must save them from this torrential rain. Who is there when you open the door? What do they want? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
