September 2025 Writing Prompts

How do you feel about the unusual holidays that are celebrated? Do you feel they should be special to everyone? How would you like to create your own? Have you ever investigated your ancestry? Would you like to meet any or all of your long-gone relatives? The leaves on the trees are starting to change color. Have you ever wondered what they are thinking about at this time of year?

The weather is cooling off and the days are getting a bit shorter, so you may be spending more time inside. That means more time to write! Create a character who loves nothing more than to celebrate off-beat or unusual holidays in the silliest way possible.

This month in addition to Labor Day, she gets to celebrate Ginger Cat Appreciation Day (I share my life with a grumpy ginger cat who loves affection and attention), World Coconut Day, and Eat An Extra Dessert Day. In what crazy ways does she choose to celebrate these off-beat holidays?

Write a story on how your character celebrates these holidays.

I found out last night that my daughter’s fourth great-grandfather on my mother’s side was a colonel in the 39th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. Colonel John Dils was opposed to slavery. He owned a tannery and general store and gave many freed slaves jobs in them. Later on, he provided gravesites for them and their descendants. The Dils Cemetery is believed to be the first integrated cemetery in Eastern Kentucky. I would have loved to know this man or any of my other long-gone descendants.

Write a story in which you get to meet one or more of your long-gone descendants. Why do you want to meet them? What things do you talk about? Would you like to go back and live when they did? Why or why not?

September 16-23
This week ushers in autumn. I noticed a few of the leaves on the trees in my back yard subtly changing color, almost like they didn’t really want to be noticed, sometime ago. But a few more leaves have joined in with them lately. Before too long, all of the leaves will be a vivid orange, yellow, maroon, or some other fall color before they escape the tree they are clinging to. Then they will fade to brown, leaving the ground crisp and crunchy. And I’ll be able to hear anytime an opossum or other animal runs across my yard.

The nights have also become much cooler than they were a month or so ago, and it is getting dark earlier.

Write a story about two or more specific leaves on a tree in your yard. Let us witness the conversations they are having. Do they realize their end of life is approaching? How do they feel about turning color? Do they get to choose the color they become? Is this a time for mourning for them, or is it a time of celebration?

Look back at the writing prompt for the first seven days of this month. Your character has had a blast celebrating all the crazy holidays this month. She (or he) has had such fun with these holidays that she decides she wants to create her own new wild and crazy holiday.

Write how your character goes about creating her own holiday and what it means to her. Then you can think about creating your own special holiday.
