August 2023 Writing Prompts

An article made up entirely of writing prompts isn’t anything new for this site, but this one is different. Here you have an entire month’s worth of writing prompts for August, a new one for each day. Write at least a section of a story—even if it’s just a paragraph—for each one. Some of them could be used to create a short story or even be the basis of a book. But most importantly, you get to put your creative writing skills to work.

𝐸𝑎𝑡, 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑦, 𝐿𝑜𝑣𝑒 author Elizabeth Gilbert has decided not to publish her February 2024 novel. She says it’s because the book is set in the Soviet Union of the 1930s, and due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the subject and setting could prove upsetting to her present-day readers.

Lucia Scafetti, the daughter of the notorious hitman Carlo Scafetti, is trying so hard to move out of the shadow of her infamous crime family. A Philly private eye, she runs her own business. To make her life complete, she has a dog, Rocco, a problem dog who just doesn’t get along with other people. But he does love Lucia. Her life is about to become very complicated though.
