Undone – a Review

Undone is a different kind of zombie book, one that will without a doubt grab your attention. I thought it was a bit slow at first, but my opinion soon changed once I understood what was happening. Then the book became impossible to put down.

At first, I thought maybe something would happen in Undone similar to what happened in Desper Hollow by Elizabeth Massie, but I was so wrong. Desper Hollow isn’t your normal zombie book, but what is happening in Undone is even more unusual.

Written in first person from the perspective of one who has been turned into a zombie, you see others and the world through his eyes and are privy to his unusual thoughts. Bit by bit, he is changing and becoming less of a zombie. He has thoughts beyond violence toward humans and eating their brains: as a matter of fact, he isn’t craving food of any kind. And the zombies he is with avoid him. Any zombie he happens to encounter moves to get away from him.

Separating himself from the horde of zombies he is wandering around with, he goes to a camp of humans. Of course, they freak out when he is noticed. But they catch him (which doesn’t take a lot of effort), keep him, and study him, amazed that he is so cooperative. They are even more astonished when not only does he learn to speak, but he learns to read. And his appearance improves. He even helps them when a horde of zombies attacks their camp and is no longer adversely affected by their bite.

Something different is going on with this zombie and his child. Yes, I said his child. Did he procreate? Nope. How he became a father totally surprised me, but there is no other explanation. I wish I knew exactly what was going on with this “zombie” and his child, but the story continues in another book that I’ll be sure to read when It is released.

If you love zombie fiction, I highly recommend this book. It is one that will stay with you long after you finish reading.
