Mr. Muffins Goes to Paris – a Review

Cats are lovable, playful companions, and they each have their own personality. Cats all have a few things in common though: they are incredibly sneaky, and they like to go places. If given the opportunity, they would all be globe-trotters. Mr. Muffins is a perfect example of this.

Mr. Muffins Goes to Paris, a rhyming picture book for children 6-8, is the first book in the Mr. Muffins Bedtime Collection. Mr. Muffins is an orange cat. After sneaking into Molly’s suitcase and hiding amongst the socks, he is on his way to Paris! What kind of adventure lays ahead for him? I can’t help but wonder how my cats would react if they had the opportunity to travel to Paris.

His adventure begins when he sees the Eiffel Tower for the first time that evening; he runs across a mouse who is lost and can’t find his way home. Not only is the mouse lost, but he can talk. Instead of chasing him—I imagine this mouse must have been shaking so hard his voice quivered—Mr. Muffins promises to help this mouse find where he lives. This unlikely pair of friends navigate through the streets of Paris with the scenery flashing by as they search for the abode of this tiny mouse. Mr. Muffins keeps his promise and sees his newfound friend home.

The illustrations by Poppy Brant are delightful. Not only is the beautiful scenery of Paris displayed, but Mr. Muffins appears quite dapper in his clothing, always with a bow tie and sometimes with a beret on his head. The mouse is as we normally see them and only clothed with fur (and a beret on the cover).

To help younger readers, at the end of the book are the definitions to ten tricky words and the four foreign words used in this book along with some questions and a yummy recipe to try. The thoughtful questions provide will lead to some discussion about this story and help your child to appreciate it even more.

I received a free copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily. If the other books in this series are as good as the first one, I highly recommend them all. If you would like to purchase this delightful book for your own reading pleasure or for a young reader you know, I’ve provided an Amazon link for you below.
