October 2023 Writing Prompts

Autumn is here, and the days are getting shorter. That first cup of coffee tastes even better on chilly mornings. Leaves changing color are beautiful to look at, and the smell of smoke from people burning wood is in the air. What a perfect time to write! Below are 31 writing prompts, one for each day of this month.

1. Anthropomorphize the autumn leaves as they are changing color. Let them talk about things they have seen, experienced, etc. during their short life.

2. One night my dogs found an opossum playing possum under a tree in our back yard. It couldn’t help but play possum because opossums “faint” just like fainting goats. Were my dogs responsible for it fainting? I have no clue, but my husband thought it was dead. It wasn’t. It was gone the next morning. Write a story about the opossum and what caused him to “faint.”

3. Write about a time you were scared so badly that all you could do was scream silently?

4. Today is Ship in a Bottle Day. A ship in a bottle is found buried deep in your attic. What secrets does it hold? Who built it, and why was it buried in the attic?

5. Write about a dark so deep that it feels alive.

6. Today is National Noodle Day. Grandma’s wonderful homemade chicken noodle soup made Doris fee all warm and cuddly whenever she thought about it. Little did she know that grandma’s soup had a dark secret behind it.

7. A killer at a masquerade ball keeps changing his disguise to evade capture.

8. Write about why black cats are thought to be bad luck. Is it true?

9. While searching for your mom’s recipe for apple stack cake, you find a notebook hidden behind all of the books of her handwritten recipes and cookbooks. Whose notebook is it? Why was it hidden? And what written inside?

10. You accept a dare to spend the night alone on Island of Dolls. What happens?

11. Today is National Fossil Day. Gerald is having a hole dug in his back yard for a swimming pool when bones are hit. They turn out to be the bones of a dinosaur.

12. Amber gets a surprise for her birthday that she really didn’t want.

13. No one will give a home to the black cat wandering around the neighborhood. Have someone overcome their fear of black cats bringing bad luck and give this kitty a forever home.

14. A town is terrorized by dragons.

15. Someone is accidentally locked in the library overnight. The books come to life once the doors are locked.

16. A very lonely spider has arachnophobia.

17. A game of Truth or Dare turns dangerous.

18. Your new neighbor isn’t as friendly as she appears to be.

19. Sarah buys a new pair of shoes. But once she puts them on, she starts dancing and can’t stop. She tries to take the shoes off but can’t.

20. Your house comes to life one night during a thunderstorm, and it doesn’t like you.

21. Since you collect dolls, you are thrilled when someone you don’t even know gives you a doll. You soon discover why they gave that doll away.

22. A stray dog follows you home one day. What is his story? Do you keep him and take care of him?

23. A thick fog descended over the deserted streets. And there is something in the fog.

24. A fun hayride turns terrifying when the Headless Horseman appears.

25.  A ghost who delights in playing pranks attaches itself to you.

26. An opal ring is found stuffed amongst some old clothes. What secrets does it hold?

27. On this Frankenstein Friday, write a story about a scientist who creates a monster.

28. A night of hunting is planned for this night, the night of the Full Hunter’s Moon. But the hunting takes a different turn when the hunters find they are being stalked and hunted by the animals.

29. A night out at the haunted house is no longer fun when a murder victim is found.
