The Secret Garden: A Flowers Primer – a Review

The look of wonder and excitement in a child’s eyes when he or she is introduced to books and the world of reading is priceless.

The Secret Garden, A Flowers PrimerMost small children are fascinated with flowers. My two-year-old granddaughter loves to watch the butterflies and the bees fly around and land on their colorful petals. Taking a toddler on a walk through a garden would be quite a fun experience for the young child and the adult.

Are you looking for a way to introduce your toddler to the fantastic world of classic literature? I don’t think it is ever too early to demonstrate to your child just how fantastic the world of reading is. In this BabyLit board book, based on The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, you can reveal the secrets of a garden and the magic of reading to a young child as you take a walk through this secret garden.

Each time you turn the page, you are greeted with a picture of a flower found in this garden. The flower’s name is given so that you can begin teaching this new word to your little one. On the attached page is a drawing of the section of the garden this flower is in. And you will see an insect or an animal visiting the flower too.

When my children were toddlers, each evening before bedtime, we would read several stories. Pointing out the flowers, saying their names, and finding the animals in each picture would have been something they really would have enjoyed. For little ones, the pictures are just as important as the words. The short simple sentence on each picture is something each child will have memorized before long.

Encourage your child to use his imagination. Ask her what she thinks is going on in each picture. You could even have the child come up with some ideas for a story. Before long, the child’s imagination should be bursting with stories about what is going on in the pictures.
