The Wyvern in the Wilderlands – a Review

The Wyvern in the Wilderlands is the story of a modern-day man being thrown into a prehistoric world of dinosaurs and attempting to survive. Full of intense action, this book is one you won’t regret reading.

Riley and Gliath are monster hunters and part of Reality Rifters. When the Jason Leaper that is their leader dies, another one is chosen to take his place.

The Jason Leaper that has been chosen to be their new leader is a guy with a bad leg addicted to YouTube videos. His life has basically been on hold for fifteen years. One day, he returns home and finds a strange crystal on his porch. He starts carrying it with him, but he doesn’t realize what this crystal is or the power that it holds. He’s about to find out the hard way.

Unknown to him, he is only one of the Jason Leapers scattered throughout the different realities. Without warning, he is ripped out of his world with all of its conveniences and thrown into a prehistoric reality. It’s a good thing that he had prepared for a long walk since this one is about to become way longer than he intended.

When he “falls” through a portal, he wakes up in a cave that is filled with bones. His cell phone and does him no good now. When I was a little girl, Land of the Lost was one of the shows I watched. The lost world of prehistoric creatures the Marshall family finds themselves in is nothing compared to the world that Jason Leaper is thrown into.

This dinosaurs in this world only want to eat him before the cannibals or the spiders do. His search for food and water—once he runs out of what he has with him in his CamelBak—and fighting for his life turn him into a fighting machine determined to survive. And survive he does. I doubt I would have lasted more than thirty seconds in such a hostile world.

His descriptions of all the dinosaurs and other creatures he encounters creates vivid pictures of them in the reader’s mind that are made more realistic by the descriptions of the sounds and smells, not all of them good, in this other reality.

Jason feels like he has been thrown into Jurassic Park after the park’s fences have failed, but the story doesn’t stop at the end of the workday. Plants are the size of men, and the bugs are ginormous. The dinosaurs come in all sizes. To his horror, he discovers that no matter how small the dinosaur is and no matter how much like a chicken it looks, its only desire is to kill and eat him. And their beaks are filled with tiny razor-sharp teeth to eat him with. On top of this, a monstrous spider as well as the cannibals are after him.
