How many sandwiches will you eat on National Sandwich Day? Will you make a pizza on National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day? Will you have an x-ray taken on X-Ray Day? What will you make for dinner on Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day?
A historical fiction novel could be written around the beginnings of one of these unique holidays. Or you could have a murder, maybe even more than one, take place at a party celebrating one of these special days.
Animal Holidays
National Go Cook for Your Pets Day – November 1 is the day to ensure that what you feed your pet is nutritious. Your faithful friend or friends will truly appreciate your efforts and love you for them.
Cooking Holidays
National Men Make Dinner Day – An official set of rules, twelve of them, has been made for this unique holiday that is always celebrated the first Thursday of each November. The men in my family just happen to be talented cooks, so this wouldn’t be a problem for any of them. However, not every guy likes to cook, and this holiday is aimed at them.
National Sandwich Day – November 3 is the birthday of the fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, the 18th-century noble who invented and first ate a sandwich. His idea obviously caught on since the sandwich is now one of America’s favorite foods.
Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day takes place on November 8. The temperatures of many places are beginning to cool down, and in some place, it is already cold. This is a day to stay nice and cozy inside your warm house and cook something that will warm up your insides. How about a nice bowl of Whistle Stop Chili? That is one of my family’s favorite fall and winter dishes. Whatever meal you do decide to cook, be prepared to make it time and time again. You are in danger of creating a family favorite for the colder months ahead.
Discovery Holidays
X-ray Day – On November 8, celebrate the discovery of x-rays by William Röntgen.
Area Code Day – It seems there is a holiday to celebrate just about everything else, so why not one to celebrate those three numbers that precede the rest of our phone number? Our area codes seem to change these days at the drop of a hat. On November 10, you could celebrate this day by researching the history of these numbers.
Food Holidays
Food holidays are pretty self-explanatory so just use your imagination with them. For example, have one of your characters explain the beginnings of National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day. Or maybe one of your characters is absolutely wild over one of the following foods. When he finds out there is a special day dedicated to that food, he goes wild celebrating it, so wild that he drives his friends and everyone around him crazy.
National Deviled Egg Day – November 2
Donut Day – November 5
National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day – November 7
National Vanilla Cupcake Day – November 10
National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day – November 12
National Homemade Bread Day – November 17
National Peanut Butter Fudge Day – November 20
National Stuffing Day – November 21
National Cashew Day – November 22
Eat a Cranberry Day – November 23
National Espresso Day – November 23
National Parfait Day – November 25
National Cake Day – November 26
Sinkie Day always takes place the day after Thanksgiving. This year it will take place on November 27. How does one celebrate this day? You eat your meals over the kitchen sink. Your crumbs will fall right into the sink for an easy cleanup.
National Bavarian Cream Pie Day – November 27
National French Toast Day – November 28
National Mousse Day – November 30
Holidays Honoring Individuals
National Housewives Day – This holiday takes place on November 3 and definitely needs more attention drawn to it. Although housewives don’t receive a paycheck for the work they regularly do, their lives are extremely busy. If the housewife has children, her days are even busier. She is the laundress, cook, nurse, accountant, maid, disciplinarian, chauffer, etc. True, she sets her own coffee breaks and lunch breaks, but her work is never done. This is a day to appreciate the housewife and all she does.
National Chicken Lady Day – Just who is chicken lady? She is Dr. Marthenia “Tina” Dupree, a lady who worked for twelve years in the second largest chicken restaurant chain in the world as the Director of Community Relations and Training. Those in her community gave her the nickname in appreciation for all that she did. Because of how much she gave to the community, President Bush declared November 4 to be National Chicken Lady Day.
