The Awakening – a Review

Bea Walker’s life was turned upside down once she discovered she was a Blood-Light (part human, part Ferroean). Her mom called it a gift. The government considers her a weapon. But Bea never had a choice. Her life hasn’t been the same since.

In The Awakening surprises are around every corner. When I began to read this book, I thought I could see the way things were going to unfold, but I was so wrong. Someone that was supposed to be dead turned out to be alive. Twists and turns are on almost every page, and very few things happened the way I thought they would.

Bea and Cash’s romance is put to the test when Sera, Cash’s former girlfriend, is awakened. It’s obvious they still have feelings for each other. Their relationship is also put into question when Ashton shows up and is attracted to Bea. But how does Bea feel about him? Well, in this situation, that isn’t taken into question. But what Ashton is meant to do still puts Bea’s romance with Cash at risk.

Besides Sera, you also get to meet Cash’s parents, royalty on Ferro. Lots of surprises are waiting for Be a on this alien planet, mostly surprises that make me glad I live on Earth. Life is a lot different there. For example, one doesn’t get to eat real food on Ferro. Sustenance comes in the form of pills. Just pills. Meal after meal, day after day.

The characters are fleshed out even more in this book. As the characters you already know and new ones you meet, like Jellybean, are fleshed out, more of the storyline is revealed and everything ties in so perfectly. Congratulations to Dana Claire for planning her story so well.

In this story filled with romance, deceit, and betrayal, who can Bea, Cash, and their friends trust? Can they trust each other?

The Awakening ends with a cliffhanger. I have a love-hate relationship with cliffhangers. I love the excitement they bring, yet I also hate it because you’re left hanging until the next book comes out. The final three chapters, the ending, are told from three different viewpoints. Each one ends in a cliffhanger. I’m interested to see how the author has her characters escape from what seems to be an inescapable situation. I really

didn’t want this story to end. Because of the cliffhanger ending, it hasn’t yet. The Reprisal is a book I’m definitely looking forward to reading.

I was sent a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. If you would like your own copy to read and enjoy, I’ve provided an Amazon link for you below.

About the Author:

When author Dana Claire had several poems published as an elementary school student, she was hooked, and writing became her passion. A shared dream of hers and her mother’s, she promised her dying mother that she would become a published author and that dream has been realized with The Connection.

Dana believes that a good story is made through strong character development; when readers become attached to the characters’ emotional state and are invested in their objectives. She believes that the beauty of reading is that one can live a hundred lives within the stories of books. Her own stories come to her in her dreams, and she wakes up with book ideas.Dana’s family is very supportive of her writing and the creativity and sentiment driving it. Enjoying bicoastal living between Los Angeles and New York, Dana says she “lives the best romance in the world being married to the most amazing man she could ever ask for.” The Connection was her debut YA novel, the first volume in a planned trilogy. The Awakening is the second volume.  She is also the author of The Reclaimed Kingdom, a YA fantasy romance novel.
