Confusing Words from Anecdote to Ark

When you are bitten by a snake, do you need an anecdote or an antidote? Do math students learn how to measure an angel or an angle? Would you be taken on a picnic by your aunt or your ant?

anecdote, antidote
An anecdote is a story.
Jerry had an anecdote to share about every situation in his life.

angel, angle
An angel is a celestial attendant of God. An angel is also a messenger for God.
An angel revealed to Mary that she was pregnant with the Son of God.

ant, aunt
An ant is an insect that delights in ruining picnics.
One single, very large ant could be seen in the distance.
An aunt is the sister of one of your parents.

ante, anti, auntie
The prefix ante means before.
Antebellum means happening or existing before the Civil War.
The prefix anti means against.
The anti-abortion movement had some very influential ladies of the community as members..
Auntie is another way of saying aunt.

any body, anybody
Any body means some unspecified human body. This isn’t referring to a person specifically; it is referring to the head, torso, and limbs.  It can also refer to a corpse.
Any body in the morgue is liable to be examined by the new coroner.
Anybody means any person or some unspecified person.
Is anybody home?

Any more  means additional.

Anymore means no longer.  It is usually used with a negative.

any one, anyone
Any one is an unidentified individual.
Would any one of your friends be interested in going to the park?
Anyone means any person.
Anyone is welcome to come to the picnic.

any way or anyway
Any way means by any method.
Just get the work done any way you can.
Anyway means in any case or regardless.
No matter what your response, I’m going to the party anyway.

appose, oppose
Appose is a verb that means to place side by side.
Sandi planned to appose her knick-knacks on the mantle..
Oppose means to act against or obstruct.
The citizens who oppose the tearing down of the historical building are meeting at 5:00 downtown.

appraise, apprise
Appraise means to estimate or to judge.
I will let you know my decision once I appraise the situation.
Apprise means to inform.
I will apprise you of what is going on.

appropriation, expropriation
An appropriation is anything, especially money, that has been set aside for a special purpose.
The large appropriation for the new medical center will be awarded at the banquet this evening.
Expropriation means a taking, especially by a government.
The expropration of the houses by the rebel government turned the citizens against them.

arc, ark
Arc is a geometrical term that means any unbroken part of the circumference of a circle or other curved line.
Teddy is learning how to measure an arc in his geometry class.
An ark is a boat.
God instructed Noah to build an ark.
