Don Quixote: A Spanish Language Primer – a Review

No matter where in the United States you live, chances are that will hear Spanish as well as English being spoken. So wouldn’t it be a great idea to start your little ones off learning the Spanish language along with English?

Don QuixoteMany items, like toilet paper and paper towels, have written on the packaging in Spanish as well as in English just what they are. These can be used to teach your child words of everyday items.

But what about things that aren’t found in a store? Introduce your young child to the classic Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes and teach them how to say items and characters found in this book in Spanish. Full of cute illustrations of the characters and things that make this story come alive, each picture has the word that tells what it is in both Spanish and English. For example, probably everyone has at least heard of the part windmills play in this story. On the pages with pictures of windmills, on the left hand page above a picture of windmills is the word “windmills.” On the right hand page above the windmills, it says “los molinos de viento.”

If you happen to know the story of Don Quixote, you could tell a simple version of it to your child as you explore this book with them. To be honest, I would be lost in retelling this story. The only thing I know about the character Don Quixote is that he was a knight who had some sort of a run-in with a windmill.

If you can’t remember the story of Don Quixote, the below video may come in handy. Please note that this video is for young children, so it is a very simple telling of this classic story.
