Michael W. Huard – What It’s Like to be a Sci-Fi & Fantasy Author in 2018

Well, here I am. Each day, I escape to another time period, sometimes even to another planet. This is the life of a writer.

Hi, everyone. Today is not unlike most days. I’m busy editing, writing, and promoting my dystopian sci-fi and fantasy book series, Mystical Slayers.

I grew up playing dungeons and dragons, and my imagination soared weekly. This helped me see words more clearly and I became very fond of such. Later, I was the game master, and stories and settings just rolled off my mind. This has all led me to become a writer.

Most people ask me: why dystopian? There’s just something about the future that is so interesting and very frightening. We advance as humans so drastically every hundred years that I can’t imagine where we will all be a thousand years from now. Well, perhaps I can as this is the time in which I have set my series.

The biggest issues will be the planet, the population, the government, and the technology that never stops growing. My teenage son is freaked out by robots, and they’re an integral part of my tales. I mean, you hold your cell phone or iPad daily and can’t keep them away. Let’s face it: these are robots. They just don’t appear like a typical looking one, say from the movie I, Robot.

So future settings where courageous people must overcome great odds speak to me.

Anyway, here’s a little bit about the series Mystical Slayers.

The stars in my story are a brave, enhanced, patriotic sisterhood of female martial artists. They are out to save America from the tyranny of a greedy corporation that through robotics have taken over the leadership in a once great but now fallen country.

Each of these women believes in a better world and will not stop until the land is free of corruption. Think Wonder Woman, Terminator, Hunger Games, and Blade Runner all in one.  Oh, and let me add that I also own a martial arts school and teach women’s self-defense classes, so you can expect some serious fight scenes in the writings. Arts like jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, karate, and Taekwondo play a big part in this story.

So far, I have published three prequel novellas and a full novel called Land of the Free. I’m now editing the follow-up novel Hope Bringers.

Take great care of yourselves, everyone. Always believe, just like the sisters of the Mystical Slayers, that the world can get better, and God bless you all!
