National Weatherman’s Day or National Weatherperson’s Day – It is tricky and nearly impossible to predict what the weather is going to do. This day honors those men and women who have decided they will attempt to do the impossible and accurately forecast whether or not our days will be sunny or rainy. I know they don’t always get it right.

One day a few winters ago was forecast to be warm and sunny, so my husband and father-in-law tore the wall off the side of our house that morning even though the temperatures were rather cold at the time. The forecast was for the day to warm up drastically, and they needed to get started early. Several hours later, it had only gotten snowy and colder. As a weather observer for our local weather station, I called them and informed them just how badly they had forecasted the weather for the day. Everyone had a good laugh about it. Their wrong forecast only proved how impossible it is to correctly predict the weather.

With the aid of major technological advances and supercomputers, their information about horrendous weather phenomena such as tornadoes or hurricanes may be a bit more precise, but we can’t fault them for not always being right. The weather seems to have a mind of its own at times. Why not honor your local weatherperson today? This day was originally created to honor the birth of John Jeffries, one of America’s first weathermen, in 1744. Celebrate this day on February 5 by thanking your local weatherperson for the good job he (or she) does.

Move Hollywood & Broadway to Lebanon, PA Day – Lebanon, PA is the former home of the David Letterman Show. It is a city with lots of room and is famous for its bologna and Wertz family homemade candies. The city is populated by a lot of Amish, so I have no clue why they would want to have Hollywood and Broadway move to their city. There are all kinds of mentions of this holiday celebrated on February 5 on the internet, but there is no mention of why it was created in the first place. Neither is anything said about how this unusual holiday is supposed to be celebrated. Using your writer’s imagination, come up with a good reason this holiday was created and how it is supposed to be celebrated. Now write a story about it.

Western Monarch Day – The endangered Western monarch is a gorgeous butterfly and the only insect that migrates.  As well as attracting tourists, it makes an important contribution as a pollinator when it winters in California. February 5 is the day that has been chosen to appreciate these beautiful winged insects..

World Nutella Day – For those of you who have never eaten nutella, you are missing out. A day honoring this extremely delicious and addictive chocolaty hazelnut spread was created in 2007. For those of you who are new to nutella or if you just want to have a good laugh, visit this page about the holiday this delicious spread inspired.

Dump Your Significant Jerk Day – This is the first day of Dump Your Significant Jerk Week, which is always the week before Valentine’s Day. If you happen to be dating a jerk or are married to one, February 1 would be the day to extricate yourself from this unhappy relationship. You alone know whether or not this day, perhaps even this entire week, is meant for you.
