Vengeance – a Review

How far would you go to get even with the men who murdered your parents right in front of you?  Would you hunt them down, torture them, and kill them?

Vengeance by AJ ScudiereSin’s life has never been easy.  She watched her parents die at the hands of the mob when only a child.  And what the mob did to her before they killed her parents made it even worse.  But Sin rose from the depths of despair.  She became angry, determined, and an extremely talented killer.

Lee’s wife and daughter were killed by the same mob that took away Sin’s family.  He also became a proficient killer, determined to do away with those that took his family from him.

They meet by accident when their scheduled kills happen to be planned on the same evening at the same house.  After another chance encounter, he does some research and finds out her identity.  Then he follows her to where she lives.

Sin likes to work alone.  Lee prefers to work alone too.  But when they discover that their goals are the same – to punish the Kurev family for their crimes – they agree to split up the kills, but that doesn’t work.  Much to their chagrin, they discover that together, they are better.

With the FBI searching for them and the mob hunting them down, Sin and Lee show extraordinary talent in eluding them both.  They are two very human people and each of them have exceptional talent in fighting and survival, but they have worked hard to gain these skills.

The story is never boring.  There is a lot of action, very well-written fight scenes, and enough interaction between the two serial killers with a conscience to keep you hooked.  I do not want the serial killers to be caught.  I mean, they seem to be doing a better job than the FBI of getting these people off the street.  Permanently.

Warning:  If you have a weak stomach, be prepared.  There is a lot of blood, gore, and violence in this book.

No, Lee was certain they wouldn’t die of exposure – they’d be shot by well-meaning mountain folk, threatened by the half-naked crazy man and the witch in the electric blue pajamas with the creepy big-eyed lizards.

New Words Learned:
arboretum – a place where trees or shrubs are cultivated for their scientific or educational interest

innocuous – having little or no adverse or harmful effect; harmless

jury rigged – I was acquainted with this word, but I’ve always heard it said differently.  Where I’m from, it sounds like people are saying jerry rigged, not jury rigged.  I guess it could be the southern accent.  The word means  to assemble quickly or from whatever is at hand, especially for temporary use

kama – The kama is a traditional Filipino and Japanese farming implement similar to a sickle used for reaping crops and also employed as a weapon.

niggling – 1)  petty; trivial; inconsequential  2)  demanding too much care, attention, time, etc.

sais – The sai is a traditional weapon used in the Okinawan martial arts. The basic form of the weapon is that of a pointed, prong shaped metal baton, with two curved prongs called yoku projecting from the handle. Sai are generally used in pairs.

telomere – the segment of DNA that occurs at the ends of chromosomes

whimsy – an odd or fanciful notion
