My Ten Most Popular Articles (So Far)

Lisa’s Writopia was created in February 2015. What are my all-time top ten articles? The ones listed below are the most popular articles on my website. Each title is a link to the article, and the first paragraph of each article is after its title.

1 – Confusing Words – Aah, Ah, Ahh, Aw, and Awe – The English language can be so confusing at times. Aah, ah, ahh, aw, and awe are all pronounced the same, but each one has a different meaning. I know that I’ve used at least one of them in the wrong way before. Chances are, so have you.

2 – Single Quotation Marks vs. Regular Quotation Marks vs. Italics – Does it really matter if you use single quotation marks or regular quotation marks? Yes, it does. It all depends on what they are being used for. It turns out that the majority of the time, regular quotation marks are called for.

3 – Pavophobia and a Pride of Peacocks – When I think of a peacock, the first thing that comes to mind is its glorious fanlike tail complete with brilliant plumage that is adorned with iridescent spots that look like eyes.  Did you realize that it is only the male of the species that has such a tail?

4 – Abandoned Houses Picture Writing Prompts – When you look at a picture, do you only see what is right in front of your eyes? Or do you see more? Maybe you can see romance. Or maybe you are someone who reads mystery and intrigue into everything you see.

5 – Physical Reactions That Show Jealousy – Jealousy is that unpleasant emotion you feel when you think someone’s trying to take what’s yours. Jealousy might creep up on you if someone flirts with your sweetie or copies your unique style.

6 – Suffering for Beauty – Neck Rings – The “giraffe women” have always fascinated me. Why would any woman allow heavy brass rings to be placed around her neck? Why would any woman submit her young daughter to such a thing? A lot of it depends on the culture you were raised in, and what you were taught to believe. The Padaung women of Myanmar still adorn themselves with neck rings and are a huge tourist attraction. Is this the only reason they still wear them?

7 – Suffering for Beauty – Lip Plates – Lip plates are pieces of jewelry that are used to modify the body, specifically the lips. In my opinion, they look painful, inconvenient, and unattractive. When lip plates are worn, the lips are stretched so far out of proportion that it looks as though eating, drinking, talking, or kissing would be impossible. For me, having even a single lip plate would be a living nightmare.

8 – Suffering for Beauty – Scarification – How much pain would you be willing to endure to be thought of as beautiful? Do you think scars are attractive? To me, scars show painful events that you have gone through. The huge scar on my abdomen is the result of a near fatal car wreck that I survived, but it isn’t something that I would have gone through willingly, nor would I have had that scar burned into my flesh.

9 – Leprechaunophobia – the Fear of Leprechauns – If you turn and see a box of Lucky Charms, does the picture of Lucky the Leprechaun on the front of it cause you to panic? Do you shy away from parties where others might be dressed as leprechauns? If so, then you might have leprechaunophobia.

10 – Diesel Engine Day & Other Strange Holidays – How humble will you be on Be Humble Day? Is Walking the Dog Day a special day for your furry friend? What do you plan to think about on International World Thinking Day? On Diesel Engine Day, will you learn how a diesel engine works?

There aren’t any book reviews in the top ten yet. My two most read book reviews are on My Cold Kentucky Home (#19) and The Miracle Ship (#24).

In this list are three articles about suffering for beauty, two articles about phobias, one grammar/punctuation article, one confusing words article, one picture writing prompts article, one strange holidays article, and one fiction writing article. I’m curious: what types of articles would you like to see more of?
