Stars and Swipes: 30 Postcards of Awkward Americana – a Review

I am proud to be an American. The reason for the festivities on the Fourth of July is to celebrate living in this great nation and to pay tribute to all those who fought and died for our freedom.

Stars and SwipesAlong with our gratitude though we should have a sense of humor. Star and Swipes: 30 Postcards of Awkward Americana allows us to look at the history of this great nation in a humorous light.

You might want to send the postcards inside this book through the mail to your friends. It is possible you would want to display this humorous book of postcards on a table in your living room as a conversation starter.

For Writers. . .
If you are a writer, you might want to use the humorous picture on each postcard as a picture writing prompt to start your stories.

My favorite postcard has to be “The Boston (Terrier) Tea Party”. Maybe it is because I love animals, or it could be that I am wild about tea. Anyway, this one struck my funny bone.

What if a bunch of Boston Terriers did have a tea party? Since dogs don’t have opposable thumbs, I would love to know how they daintily pick up their tea cups.

Did these Boston Terriers have a special reason for their tea party? Was it to drink tea and socialize? Or was it to fight unfair taxation?

Remember studying what happened on the Oregon Trail when you were in school?  How about the Oregano Trail? While on the trail, people are having sneezing fits? Could it be all of the oregano?

Oil from oregano can actually help to relieve fits of sneezing, but what if this spice, like pepper, really made people sneeze instead? Could the pioneers have survived riding the Oregano Trail?

Give me liberty or give me death!” Those famous words spoken by Patrick Henry are not hard at all to commit to memory. But let’s be honest. Would any of us have been brave enough to speak those words? Or would we have been more like the guy beside Patrick Henry and only ask for the liberty part?

Write a story about a good friend of Patrick Henry who wanted nothing to do with the death part of things. Was he as patriotic as Patrick Henry was? Or did only have a form of patriotism that would bend to the will of others at the first sign of trouble?

What if Lewis and Clark were accompanied by a third companion that history tells us nothing about? Could he have been so annoying that Lewis and Clark somehow left him behind somewhere? Did they maybe set a trap for him to fall into? Could they have arranged for his untimely demise?

I’ve always heard that it is tough to hail a cab in New York, but no one has had a tougher time getting one to stop for her than the Statue of Liberty. She has had her hand raised for a bit over a hundred years, but not one cab has stopped to pick her up.

If a cab did stop to pick up Lady Liberty, where would she have the cab driver take her?

For Teachers. . .
If you are a homeschool teacher or a history teacher with a sense of humor, these postcards can be used as a humorous way to start a study on any of the characters or situations depicted.

What about an in-depth study of one of the following:
the Boson Tea Party
the Oregon Trail
the Statue of Liberty
Patrick Henry

About the Author:
Wilhelm Staehle is a horribly disfigured gentleman who often frightens small children when passing by. While hermitting himself in his sprawling estate on the western coast of the Americas, he divides his free time between sporting for fox hunters and dressing his broad collection of taxidermy. He also finds time to craft silhouettes. He begs you to enjoy them. Or at least refrain from informing him if you do not. He thanks you for your time.
