The Awakening – an Excerpt

I squeezed his hand and he squeezed back. My shoulders released a half of an inch as we continued down the hall. You look good in Ferro clothes. He raked over me with his intense gaze, sending goosebumps to my arms. You look really good.

I blushed, letting my eyes meet the ground in front of me. Out of all the times Cash could be charming, this was his moment? I chuckled to myself as the situation’s weight tugged at my shoulders.

The corridor came to a t-intersection, a tall, chrome-inlaid doorway straight ahead. Two Guards waited there, showing not even the barest hint of emotion. They were all business, their thermo daggers dangling at their sides.

“Captain Cash, Captain Ashton,” the Guards said in unison. They stared at me, unsure how to address me. Cash spoke, “This is the opposing source to my own, Beatrice Walker. My girlfriend.”

Girlfriend? I questioned through our minds.

Cash ignored me, leaned in, and whispered, “She’s also the infamous Blood-Light prophesied to save our planet and she has the ability to kill us in one blast.” He stepped back in line with me and said, “Have a lovely morning.”

The soldier’s pale and fear-struck expression said it all. I was not welcome here. We turned right and I pressed my shoulder into his. “Was that necessary?”

Cash smiled. “Nope. Not at all.” He lifted my hand to his mouth and kissed it.

Don’t you think you should at least have asked me? I pushed into his mind. We had so much to discuss and now was his moment to be comfortable with titles.

I didn’t think you’d care.

I twisted my head and stopped walking. Ashton practically barreled into me. “You didn’t think I would care?” I released his hand and crossed them over my chest. “How romantic! The guy I like tells two alien guards I’m his girlfriend before he tells me?” I shook my head. “Really, Cash?”

Ashton released a low whistle. “Totally saw this coming.” He turned to Latmon. “Got any popcorn, Alfred? This is always entertaining to have front row seats at.”

“Popcorn, Sir?” Latmon questioned. He pulled out a device and pressed several buttons.

“I’m sorry I didn’t get down on one knee with a dozen roses and chocolates for you just to ask you a question I already know the answer to.” Cash’s tone dripped with sarcasm.

“Oh, you think you already know the answer, do you?” I shook my head so hard my neck cracked. “Maybe I changed my mind.”

Cash laughed. He actually had the balls to laugh. “You must be kidding me? How stupid of me to think with the impending asteroids and potential end of the world scenario you might be ok with a simple, ‘Hey this is my girlfriend’ instead of a parade down main street.”

“We don’t have a main street,” Ashton offered.

“Technically, Capital Street is our main street,” Latmon responded.

“Shut up,” Cash and I said at the same time.

Latmon straightened his spine. “My apologizes, Captain and Miss Beatrice, but we really mustn’t be late.” He placed the device he had been holding in his back pocket and started forward.
