Treasure Island: A Shapes Primer- a Review

Toddlers begin learning about shapes from the toys they play with. Shape sorting cubes are made for children as young as one year old.

Treasure Island, A Shapes PrimerThere are also board books for babies that start teaching the shapes, but what about those of us who want to instill a love of great literature in our young ones while teaching them about the different shapes? Jennifer Adams has come up with the solution for us in Treasure Island: A Shapes Primer.

This BabyLit board book uses shapes based on the classic tale Treasure Island. For example: the square is illustrated with a picture of The Admiral Benbow tavern. The building itself is in the shape of a square. There are three windows on the tavern, and each window is in the shape of a square with multiple squares making up each window.

While you are teaching your young one shapes with this book, you can tell the classic tale of Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver, and buried treasure.

For those of you who aren’t acquainted with this classic tale, below is a cartoon version of it that you can watch along with your children. It is just under five minutes long.

The artwork in this book was done by Alison Oliver. The bright colors in her illustrations should please any child.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you would like your own copy, I have provided an Amazon link below.

  1. That looks like a fun and interesting book to have.
My daughter is turning two in a few months and I think she would love this. She likes shapes right now and this would help her learn all about shapes and treasure island. Maybe this will be a Christmas stocking filler!
    Thanks for reviewing this book.

    • My granddaughter just turned three. She is the one who gets the BabyLit books when I’m done with them. I’m sure your daughter would enjoy this book too.
